This year's Super Bowl halftime show opened with Rihanna on a floating stage, about 60 feet in the air, dressed in a red jumpsuit. This being her first live show in over seven years, fans were unsure of what to expect. What songs will be included? Will there be surprise guests? Is she going to announce a new album? While some were disappointed by the lack of cameos, Rihanna did surprise everyone by announcing another pregnancy.
The singer began the show with a fan favorite, “Bitch Better Have My Money,” – a clever opener considering Super Bowl performers don’t get paid – while suggestively rubbing her stomach. Fans quickly speculated that she was announcing another pregnancy, while others were hesitant to believe that she was pregnant again after giving birth to her first child in May 2022. After the show, however, Rihanna’s publicist confirmed that the singer is, in fact, expecting another child with her partner, A$AP Rocky.
Aside from this exciting news, the 13-minute performance featured a mashup of several hits, including, but not limited to “Where Have You Been,” “Only Girl (In the World),” “Wild Thoughts,” “All of the Lights,” and “Umbrella.” From floating platforms to intricate and fun choreography, these 13 minutes reminded us of how easily Rihanna can dominate a stage, regardless of how long she’s been away. From dance tracks to chill trap, Rihanna has albums full of hits perfect for a Super Bowl performance. Each song reflected a different era from Rihanna’s long and successful career, and ending with “Diamonds,” was a beautiful and emotional ending to the powerful show.
